8 Money-Saving Car Hire Tips for Your Next European Break

Have you dreamed of exploring Europe but aren’t sure enough where to start?

If you’re raring to discover picturesque mountain roads, big historic cities, hidden countryside gems – or maybe all of them in one go! – hitting the open road and going on a road trip might just be what you’re looking for.

Hiring a car lets you uncover the continent’s most beautiful locations. I’ve had the joy and pleasure of driving in lots of countries across Europe (even though as a Brit who’s used to the left hand side of the road) and driving around is quite possibly my favourite way to see a place!

Stumbling upon craggy stunning beach coves only accessible by car, having incredible seafood at far flung little fishing villages miles away from the nearest train station, revving your way to the top of a mountain to witness an epic sunset above a pine tree forest… all these things are part of the magic of exploring Europe.

But while driving around Europe sounds exciting, the extra costs tied to car hire can easily pile up unless you know how to manage them. (Getting blindsided by premium insurance costs, anyone?) I’ve since learned some useful budget-saving tips for car hires in Europe.

So before you go on that dreamy drive along the Mediterranean coast, here are eight smart budget-saving car hire tips to help you save money on your next road trip.

Tips for Saving Money on Car Hires in Europe

1. Book Early, Especially in Peak Season

In Europe, car hire demand goes up fast during summer months and school holidays. The earlier you book, the more options you have and usually at better prices. Last minute bookings often mean higher prices or limited vehicle availability, especially in popular destinations.

2. Compare Car Deals with the Right Tools

Use trusted aggregator platforms to view offers from multiple car hire providers. These tools let you filter by car type, transmission, pick-up location and fuel policy, and they often show full costs including taxes and fees, so there will be no surprises after booking.

3. Stay Away from Airport Pick-Ups

While picking up a car at the airport sounds like the perfect solution, it’s an option that often leaves you being charged extra due to location fees added by the car suppliers for operating inside the terminal. Naff. Look for convenient pick-up alternatives, like collecting your car from nearby central spots or using shuttle bus transportation to reach the vehicle. A short ride into town could save you a noticeable amount, especially in places like Madrid, Rome or Amsterdam.

4. Don’t Overdo the Car Size

Unless you’re travelling with lots of people or heavy luggage, smaller cars are almost always the better value. They’re cheaper to hire, more fuel-efficient, and easier to drive and park, a big plus on narrow streets in older European cities. Bonus points if you can drive a manual! (It certainly feels more romantic and nostalgic – unless you’re in an old dusty Suzuki Jimny struggling to get up a hill, as was the case when I went to Skiathos!). If your trip is only for a few days, consider whether a premium car is truly necessary. A more modest option might suit your needs just as well and help you save money.

5. Be Strategic About Fuel Policies

Fuel policies can seem confusing if you’re not familiar with car hire. Sometimes I’ll read a car hire contract and think, what are the differences between the “full-to-full” and the prepaid fuel? What’s this needless jargon?!

I’ve learned the hard way that while the second option of prepaid may look tempting, the first one is widely considered the most fair and economical. You pick the car up with a full tank and return it full. I’d recommend avoiding prepaid fuel options unless you’re absolutely sure you’ll return it empty, otherwise you’ll end up paying more at the end.

6. Watch Out for Crossing Country Borders

Planning to cross country borders during your trip? Not all car hire companies allow it, and some charge extra for it so make sure to ask in advance. Check the cross-border policy carefully when booking, and always inform the provider if you plan to drive into another country.

7. Bring Your Own Car Accessories

Extra features like sat navs, toll passes or baby seats can significantly increase daily fees. Whenever possible, bring your own gear instead. Your smartphone can be used for navigation, and travel booster seats are easy to pack. One thing I always regret not bringing is my own sticky window phone-holder

8. Take Photos of the Car Before and After

When you collect the hired car, walk around it, inspect its condition and take clear photos of any scratches or damage, including the interior. Do the same when you return it, so you can prove that you returned it in the same condition as you received it. It’s a simple step that can save you from unfair damage charges later.

A European break doesn’t need to come with an expensive car hire bill.

By thinking ahead and avoiding the usual traps, you can enjoy the open road and still stay well within your travel budget.
